How to Anchor Kitchen Island Cabinets

Regardless of the reasoning for your kitchen island, you likely want to anchor the island to the floor to prevent it from moving while you use it. The process of anchoring the island is relatively straightforward, and the island will likely come with all of the necessary fasteners to complete the task.

  • Determine the exact location you want your island to remain. Use the tile grout or faux grout lines on the linoleum to position the island straight on the floor. The island bolts to the floor so you cannot move it later without repairing holes; take time to determine the correct spot.

  • Trace the outside perimeter of the island on the floor with a pencil or chalk.

  • Place the island on its side and measure the thickness of the lumber the island is made out of. Usually, the base of the island is constructed of 2-by-4 inch lumber. For an example, say the thickness is 2 inches.

  • Draw a second line inside the first line you drew on the floor that measures 2 inches away from the first line.

  • Cut 2-by-4 inch lumber on a miter saw to fit inside the second line so you can create a box out of the 2-by-4 inch inch lumber.

  • Secure the lumber to the floor with 3-inch wood screws.

  • Place the island over the boards you screwed to the floor. Secure the island to the frame secured to the floor by driving 2-inch wood screws through the base of the island and into the wood frame.
