How to Clean a Carpet With Peroxide & a Steam Cleaner

  • Paper towels or clean white cotton cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Spray bottle with a 5 parts to 1 part water/hydrogen peroxide solution
  • Steam cleaner
  • Emulsifying spray cleaner
  • Rinsing solution

Wear and tear is inevitable and the primary function of any good maintenance program is to protect your carpet from excess wear rather than trying to cure it of cleaning disasters after the fact. While the most important factor in carpet care is regular vacuuming, unexpected spills may require the use of steam and peroxide.

  • Blot the spill from the carpet with a dry paper towel or clean white cotton cloth. Do not rub the stain as this may force it deeper into the carpet fibers. Vacuum all dry dirt and debris from around the stained area.

  • Mix a solution of 5 parts water to 1 part household hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Spray the stain area lightly. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes. Blot the stain with a dry paper towel or clean white cotton cloth.

  • Prep the steam cleaner by pouring the manufacturer's recommended cleaning solution into the tank. Plug the cleaner in and turn it on to allow the unit to heat properly.

  • Spray the stain with the manufacturer's recommended emulsifier. Brush the emulsifier into the stain with the steam cleaner's grooming tool and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.

  • Extract the moisture from the carpet with the steam cleaner's extractor. This action will simultaneously rinse the emulsifier from the carpet.

    • Tip

    Always thoroughly clean the steam cleaner after each use.

    Warning

    Never use dry heat, such as from a hair dryer to try to dry the stain. Dry heat may seal the stain into your carpet.

    Overwetting the carpet can result in delayed drying time.

    Inadequate rinsing can leave a residue that may actually attract dirt.
