How to Clean Mahogany Wood Floors

Mahogany is a term used to describe a variety of different dark-colored woods. It is reddish brown, has a straight grain, no grooves or pockets and it is durable. These traits make it a popular choice for flooring. When cared for properly, mahogany floors can last a long time. Proper care of mahogany floors is fairly straightforward; they need to be cleaned and polished regularly with a gentle cleanser.   • Remove all dirt, dust and debris from your mahogany floor. Sweep thoroughly before wet cleaning. If necessary use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dirt, dust and debris from beneath furniture and other hard-to-reach places. Use a dust mop daily to remove fine particles and prevent them from dulling the finish on your floor.

  • Mix 1 qt. of warm water and 1 qt. of undiluted vinegar in a mop bucket. Submerge your mop in the solution and swish it around to mix the two ingredients. Wring your mop out, so it is moist but not saturated.

  • Mop your mahogany wood floor in small sections. Submerge and wring out your mop as needed. Wipe excess moisture from each section with a soft cloth.

  • Moisten a soft cloth with olive oil. Polish your mahogany floor in a circular motion with the cloth. Allow the olive oil to set for about 30 minutes, then wipe up the excess olive oil and dry the floor to a shine with a dry, lint-free cloth.
