How to Clean Vinyl Window Trim

Homeowners often select vinyl window trim and siding due to its durability and low maintenance. Vinyl window trim can be cleaned with a power washer, but failure to properly use the power-washing equipment may result in damage to the siding and possible leaking.

Things You Will Need

+
  • 1/4 cup dishwashing soap
  • Quart-size spray bottle
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Water hose
  • 1 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • Rubber gloves
  • Ladder

Commercial products are available for cleaning vinyl trim, but they can be abrasive and expensive. Instead, thoroughly clean your vinyl window trim with common household products.

  • Pour 1/4 cup dishwashing soap into a quart-size spray bottle. Fill the bottle with hot water and shake the contents to mix.

  • Spray the window trim with the soap solution and scrub the trim with a soft-bristle brush. Rinse the window trim thoroughly with cool water. Use a water hose if you have one handy.

  • Pour 1 1/3 cup white vinegar into a quart-size spray bottle. Fill the bottle with hot water and shake the contents to mix.

  • Spray the window trim with the vinegar solution and use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the trim. Vinegar is particularly suited for removing mildew from vinyl siding. Pour cool water over the trim to rinse the vinegar off.

  • Tip

Always wear rubber gloves to protect your hands when working with cleaning solutions.

    Warning

If you have to use a ladder to reach the window, have someone hold the ladder while you’re cleaning the trim.
