How to Convert a Pull Out Couch

Pull-out couches, also known as sofa beds or sleeper sofas, are handy to have in small spaces or in homes where all the bedrooms are occupied. With the pull of a handle, you have an instant guest room.

Pull-out couches are also mainstays at hotels and condominiums, saving vacationers the expense of renting larger or multiple accommodations. Most sleeper sofas, when converted, are the size of a double bed.

Tip

Pull-out couches come with built-in mattresses, which vary in comfort level. If you're buying a sleeper sofa, try out the mattress in the store and decide whether you want to change it for one more suited to your needs; it could mean paying extra.

  • Remove all of the couch cushions and pillows; the bed frame is beneath the seat cushions.

  • Look for a handle or grip on the bed frame.

  • Pull the bed frame up until you can bring it toward you as the frame starts to unfold.

  • Drag the frame gently down to the floor; it will be two-thirds unfolded and resting on one set of legs.

  • Unfold the last third of the mattress, which will have its own set of legs to stand on.
