How to Cut a Convex Design in My Fence

Wooden privacy and picket fences can be designer-friendly with a convex design so that they do not create a solid horizontal line at the top of the fence line as a boundary. A convex design gives a fence character and breaks the monotony of a standard fence. Convex designs must be uniform all along the fence line to retain their pattern. Building a pattern, cutting each section of fencing one at a time and then installing the fence will ensure that the convex design retains its integrity.

Making a Pattern

Step 1

Lay a sheet of plywood on either a flat part of ground or between two sawhorses for support. Lay a wooden pre-fabricated fence panel on the plywood so that the top of the panel is flush with an 8-foot-long side of the plywood. Tighten the fence panel on each end to the plywood with C-clamps.

Step 2

Measure and mark the middle of the fence panel with a pencil. This will be the tallest point of the concave design in your fence. Mark each end of the top of the fence panel for the lowest part of the fence design. Measure the fence panel 4 inches from the top on each end and mark with a pencil. Attach a string to the pencil and use as a protractor to draw the concave design on the fence panel. Draw the line from one side to the top and then to the other side.

Step 3

Cut along the convex line with a circular saw so that you cut through both the fence panel and the plywood. Remove the C-clamps and remove the cut fence panel. Take the plywood off the ground or sawhorses and place an uncut fence panel in its place. Place the plywood on top of the fence panel and attach on two sides with C-clamps. Use the cut piece of plywood as a pattern to cut each panel with the same design before installing the panels on your fence.
