How to Fix a Broken Light Socket

The most basic of light fixtures are usually just simple white porcelain bulb sockets. When this fixture is broken, or even if you just want to upgrade to a nicer one, it will need to be replaced.

  • Turn off the power to the circuit by switching off the electricity at the breaker box.

  • Remove the cover plate from the light fixture.

  • Use a voltage tester or a multi-meter to test and ensure that there are no live wires in the electrical box. Do this by touching the probes to the wires in the electrical box. If you get a reading, you should go back to the breaker box to make sure you have turned off the appropriate breaker.

  • Take note of how the wires are connected to the fixture. For most simple socket-type fixtures, there are only positive (usually white) and ground wires (usually black).

  • Disconnect the broken fixture and dispose of it. Connect the new fixture in the same way as the old one.

  • Replace the fixture cover and you are finished.
