How to Get Rid of Head Lice on Furniture

Sometimes getting rid of head lice can seem like an impossible task. The problem is usually not that the lice on a person’s head survives treatment, it's that it remains on furnishings, only to re-infect everyone in the household after treatments are complete.

The only way to ensure you have gotten rid of lice is to treat your furniture as carefully as you treat your scalp. It takes effort but is well worth it to eliminate the possibility of re-infestation.

Things You Will Need

  • Plastic bags
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Lice insecticide spray

  • Remove as many elements from your furniture as possible. Take off sofa covers, armrest covers, sheets, pillowcases, blankets, cushions and throw pillows.

  • Place all washable fabrics and pillows into a clothes drier on high for 30 minutes. Place them in the washer and wash in hot water, then back into the drier again until dry.

  • Dry clean all non-washable material.

  • Place any removable materials that cannot be washed into sealed plastic bags for three weeks.

  • Vacuum all upholstered furniture and mattresses thoroughly. Remove the vacuum bag or filter and dispose of it, and empty and clean the canister.

  • Spray a head lice insecticide, available at drug stores that sell de-lousing supplies, on all furniture following the manufacturer’s directions.
