How to Get Rid of the Smell or Odor in Your Front-Loading Maytag Neptune Washing Machine

If your Maytag Neptune front-loading washer has a foul odor, the smell can transfer to your laundry. Although front-loading washing machines are good for saving energy, they are also notorious for emitting a musty odor. Fortunately, this problem can be remedied quickly.

Detergent buildup and water deposits can lead to odors in your washer.

Give your Maytag Neptune washer a thorough cleaning to remove the smell and help to ensure each load of laundry comes out smelling fresh.

Things You Will Need

+
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Bucket
  • Rags
  • Baking soda

Tip

Keep the washer door open when not in use to allow air to circulate throughout the machine. Dry the rubber seal with a rag after each use to get rid of standing water, which can lead to a foul odor.

Warning

Wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when using chlorine bleach.

Removing Odor with Chlorine Bleach

  • Remove all laundry from the machine. Mix 1 cup chlorine bleach and 2 cups of warm water in a bucket.

  • Dip a rag into the bleach mixture. Wipe out the rubber seal of the door with the rag and bleach solution.

  • Pull out the dispenser tray and fill the bleach dispenser to the maximum fill line with chlorine bleach. Run the washing machine through a complete cycle with hot water.

  • Repeat the wash cycle with no bleach to rinse out the machine. Dry the rubber seal around the door with a rag to remove standing water.

  • Removing Odor with Baking Soda

  • Take everything out of the washer. Mix ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup of water in a bowl to create a paste.

  • Scoop the paste from the bowl with a clean rag. Scrub the interior walls thoroughly with the baking soda paste.
