How to Hang a TV on an Ikea TV Unit

IKEA TV units often allow you to mount TVs to the units themselves. Proper installation of the TV ensures that it won't slip loose or fall once it's in place.

How to Hang a TV on an Ikea TV Unit

IKEA offers furniture solutions to meet just about any need in the home. For the living room, this includes TV units that hold all of your TV accessories as well as your TV itself. While some of these units are designed so you simply place your TV on top of them, others allow you to actually hang your flat screen TV from supports built into the unit itself. Once you have the unit assembled, hanging your TV requires just a little more work.

Things You Will Need

+
  • Furniture straps or brackets (included with TV unit)
  • Stud finder
  • Screws
  • Wall anchors (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • IKEA TV mounting kit
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Drill (optional)

Secure the Unit

  • Secure the TV unit to the wall using furniture straps or brackets supplied in the IKEA kit. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs to attach the straps to or install wall anchors to ensure that the straps won't come loose. This will keep the unit from tipping over once the TV is installed.

  • Warning

Mount the furniture straps or brackets as close to the center of the unit as possible to ensure maximum effectiveness. Furniture secured near the sides can still tip or rotate, potentially causing serious injury and other damage.

    Mark the Mounting Point

  • Position the mounting bar from your IKEA TV mounting kit on the area of your TV unit that will hold the TV. Use a level to ensure that the mounting bar is properly positioned, then mark the screw hole locations with a pencil. Consult the instructions that come with your mounting bar to determine which screw holes need to be marked for that particular model.

  • Install the Mounting Bar

  • Punch out or drill the marked holes if necessary, then insert a hex bolt through the holes with the head remaining in front of the mounting bar. Secure the bolts using supplied washers and wingnuts.

  • Install the Hangers

  • Lay your TV screen down on a soft surface, exposing the back. Identify the four mounting holes around the center of the TV's back plate. Position the two large hanger cylinders over the top two holes, using the included hex bolts to attach the bumpers to the TV.

  • Install the Bumper Mounts

  • Screw the bumper mounts into the lower mounting holes of your TV, using your fingers to tighten the bumper bolts since the bumper mounts feature bolt segments on both sides of the mount. The thicker bolt segments should face out from the TV, while the thinner segments screw into the TV mounting holes.

  • Install the Bumpers

  • Screw the bumpers onto the bolt segments sticking out from the bumper mounts on the back of your TV. Use your fingers to tighten the bumpers as much as possible onto the bolts.

  • Install the Hanger Mounts

  • Place the hanger mounts on the mounting bar, holding them at an angle to slide them on the ends and then tilt them down until they hang freely. Slide them along the mounting bar until they are in the proper position to mount the TV.

  • Hang the TV

  • Hold the TV vertically and line up the hangers on the back of the TV with the holes in the hanger mounts. Insert the hangers through the holes, aligning the groove in the hangers with the edge of the mount holes. Once the hangers are properly in the mount holes, carefully release the TV so that it is supported by the mounting bar. The bumpers at the bottom will keep the TV from leaning.

  • Tip

Get someone to help you hang the TV to make the process easier. This will also greatly decrease the chance of injury or damage to the TV.
