How to Install a Basketball Goal on a Pitched Roof

Advances in basketball goal designs give homeowners more options. If you do not want to deal with all the digging or the unattractive pole associated with a pole-mounted system, use a basketball goal that is adjustable and versatile enough to mount to any pitched roof. Many roof-mounted basketball systems are able to adjust up to four feet in height with the use of slide assemblies and nut-and-bolt lock-downs. They also give the option of choosing different backgrounds and rims, creating a package to your liking.   • Choose an area on the roof to mount the basketball goal that has adequate playing space below. The playing court should be level, smooth and large, such as a driveway or patio. The roof should be high enough so the rim measures 10 feet above the playing surface.

  • Assemble the basketball goal according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Spread anti-seize lubricant on all exposed bolts to guard against rust and ensure proper pivot operation. Avoid getting the lubricant on bolt threads. Wipe the lubricant off your hands with clean rags.

  • Set a ladder up to the roof so it is secure. Have a helper hold the ladder if needed for added support.

  • Climb the ladder and use a stud finder to locate the studs on either side of the pitch. Mark the studs with a marker.

  • Place the mounting frame at the desired location on the roof. Hold a small level against the frame to ensure the front is flush with the eave or gutters.

  • Drill pilot holes with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Secure the frame with as many lag screws and washers as needed for your model. Tighten with the drill or a screwdriver, but do not overtighten. Spread a standard waterproof silicone over the screws and around the holes.

  • Place the level on each side of the front of the frame to ensure it is plumb. Tighten telescoping rods with as many hex bolts as needed for your model using a torque or socket wrench.

  • Position the assembly on the frame, determining the appropriate configuration. Ask a helper to check the assembly, making certain it is sitting squarely on the roof. Mount the backboard to the frame according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Use a small level to check the backboard, making sure it is plumb.

  • Tighten all hardware and attach the net to the rim.
