How to Install a Pivot Retainer in a Moen Faucet

Some Moen single-handle faucets with a cap on top and use a pivot retainer system to secure the faucet cartridge inside the faucet. This is a two-part mechanism consisting of the pivot nut and pivot retainer. Sometimes the pivot retainer becomes worn and requires replacement. Installing a pivot retainer in a Moen faucet requires some disassembly of the faucet but does not require removing the cartridge. Replacement pivot retainers are available at home improvement centers.

Step 1

Go under the sink and shut off the water supply to the faucet. Go to the faucet and lift the handle to drain out any water in the line. Push the faucet handle back down once no water is draining from the spout.

Step 2

Pry the cap off the top of the faucet handle with a flat screwdriver. Remove the screw inside the top of the handle with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the handle away from the faucet.

Step 3

Lift the black pivot retainer straight off the faucet. The pivot retainer looks similar to a wide washer sleeve. Twist the pivot retainer nut counterclockwise and remove it from the faucet.

Step 4

Thread the new pivot retainer nut over the faucet until it is hand tight. Slip the pivot retainer over the top of the nut, lining up the small tabs on the inside of the retainer with the small notches on the nut.

Step 5

Place the handle over the pivot retainer and secure the handle with the retaining screw. Push the cap over the top of the handle and turn on the water supply.
