How to Install a Quick Vent for Plumbing

Installing a quick vent, or Studor vent, is a common method for allowing air ventilation into a drain system without adding a costly and time-consuming stack vent from the drain to the roof of the building.

A quick vent can be installed on the existing drainpipe.

Things You Will Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Studor vent or equivalent quick vent

A quick vent attaches to the drain line and uses negative air pressure to allow air into the trap after water is moved through the drainpipe. Installing a quick vent requires only one tool and can be done in a few minutes.

  • Turn the ball valve on the main water line counterclockwise until it stops. This will shut off the flow of water to the interior plumbing. The shutoff valve usually has a yellow or orange handle and is located along the main water line in the basement, crawl space or access panel.

  • Lay a towel down under the drainpipe. Water will likely leak out of the pipe when you remove it.

  • Position an adjustable wrench around the locking rings of the straight section of the drainpipe and turn it counterclockwise to remove the pipe. The straight pipe is parallel to the floor and connects to the wall.

  • Insert a T-pipe into the space where the straight pipe was located, making sure the vertical opening is pointed straight up. Tighten the locking nuts on both sides to connect the T-fitting to the drain.

  • Place the Studor vent or other quick vent onto the top of the T-fitting and turn it clockwise to tighten it into the T-fitting hole.

  • Remove the towel and wipe up any excess moisture from the area around the pipe. Turn the ball valve on the main water line clockwise, until it stops, to return the flow of water to normal.
