How to Install GE Cooktops

When a kitchen is not designed for housing a full stove, the solution is a cooktop range. Installed at countertop level above the cabinetry, a cooktop provides ease of use in a convenient area in gas or electric models. Installing a GE model cooktop is straightforward but riddled with hazards if you are not careful or knowledgeable in electric wiring and gas appliance installation. It can be a do-it-yourself project if you work with great care and follow all GE recommendations.

  • Shut off the electrical power to the outlet where the cooktop will be plugged in. Installing the cooktop without shutting off the power can result in serious injury or death, GE warns. Turn off the gas supply valve as well.

  • Install a junction box with screws underneath the area where the cooktop will go. GE recommends installing the approved junction box 16 inches beneath the cooktop surface on the wall facing you as you stand in front of the stove.

  • Line the edge of the cooktop with the included foam tape and screw the mounting brackets along those edges with the mounting screws. You may need to drill some guiding screw holes if there are none previously existing. Note: This is only for certain models of glass top cooktops.

  • Set the cooktop into the opening. Verify there is at least 15 inches clearance from adjacent walls and cabinets and 30 inches clearance from the cooktop to the bottom of the cabinets overhead, with a maximum cabinet depth of 13 inches for both gas and electric cooktops.

  • Secure the cooktop to the counter with four wood screws for standard counters and four masonry screws for tiled counters. Drill screw guide holes in the appropriate places if there are none pre-drilled.

  • Connect all electric connections to the junction box. This varies by model and type, so refer to your model's GE installation manual for specifications.

  • Connect the gas supply to the cooktop pipe, if your GE cooktop is a gas model. Turn on the pipe's shutoff valve and check that the coupling is tightened and secure.

  • Turn on the house gas supply and electric power.
