How to Install Metal Siding on My Garage

Siding can help protect your home or garage. Metal siding in particular protects the frame of your garage from impact damage. Siding can also prevent water from penetrating your garage’s frame. Usually made from aluminum or steel, metal siding installs relatively easily provided you have the right tools and follow instructions properly. Getting your hands on a manufacturer’s installation manual will provide essential information that is specific to your siding.

Preparation

Purchase metal siding from a hardware store or other supplier.

Step 1

Use your measuring tape to measure the surface area of each wall of your garage that you wish to cover with siding. Measure wall length from side to side and height from top to bottom.

Step 2

Using your calculator, add the surface area calculations of each wall to determine the total surface area you need to cover with your metal siding.

Step 3

Purchase siding sheets from a manufacturer or vendor. Buy enough sheets to cover the total area of all sides of your garage. Ask for an installation manual, which you absolutely need to complete installation. Contact the panel manufacturer for this manual if it is not readily available.

Step 4

Collect all the fasteners – screws, nails, pins and bolts – and tools you need in one place. Purchase these items if necessary. Store them on or near your work bench for easy access.

Step 5

Put on all your safety gear, from your gloves to your boots to your protective eyewear, before beginning the project. Load your nails into your nail gun if necessary.

Step 6

Your siding may not perfectly fit your garage walls. Using your snips or power saw, cut your siding sheets to fit the exact dimensions of your garage walls.

Horizontal Installation, Vertical Panels

Step 1

Horizontal siding panels install vertically. This means you install these panels moving up or down on the wall, not side-to-side. Set the first panel in place by carefully lining it up exactly with the top or bottom of your garage wall, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 2

Use your nail gun or drill to drive your fasteners through the siding panel and into your garage wall. Place fasteners exactly where instructed per your installation manual, and always at even intervals. Use your measuring tape to determine intervals if necessary.

Step 3

Place your second panel against the wall. Holding it in place, attach it to the first panel. Each manufacturer provides its own means of affixing panels to one another. Follow manufacturer instructions for affixing panels.

Step 4

Follow instructions from Step 2 to affix your second siding panel to your garage wall. Once affixed, repeat Steps 1 through 3 until you cover all surfaces of your garage with siding.

Vertical Installation, Horizontal Panels

Step 1

Vertical siding panels install horizontally. You install these panels moving from one side of your garage wall to the other, rather than moving from the bottom to the top. Place your first panel against your garage wall, either at the far right or far left edge of the wall, as per manual instructions.

Step 2

Repeat Step 2 from Section 2.

Step 3

Vertical metal siding usually exhibits a standing seam. This means that the edge of your second panel fits underneath the edge of your first panel and attaches with a locking mechanism. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to lock these panels together.

Step 4

Repeat Step 2 to affix your second vertical siding panel to your garage wall. Once affixed, repeat steps 1 through 3 until you cover every surface of your garage.
