How to Install Undermount Sinks Under Tile Countertops

Countertops can have tow different types of sinks installed depending on the preference of the home owner. A sink can be installed through the top of a tile counter or to the underside of a tile counter. Both installation options will require first cutting a hole for the sink in the counter. The first step in installing a sink to the underside of a tile counter is mounting the sink to the counter before cutting and laying the tile.

Installaing the Sink

  • Measure the length and width of the counter to find the center.

  • Set the counter top upside down over on the base cabinets or on a set of saw horses.

  • Place the sink upside down on the counter top and trace around it using a pencil. This will give you the outside edge of the sink.

  • Draw a second outline line ½ an inch on the inside of the first line. The second line is going to be used as the cut line.

  • Drill a hole into the counter for the saber saw with a power drill. Place the power drill on the inside of the second line and drill a hole along the pencil line.

  • Insert the saber saw into the hole and begin cutting along the outline.

  • Place the sink upside down over the opening of the countertop.

  • Mark the location of the screw hole in the sink on the countertop with a pencil.

  • Remove the sink and then drill holes into the underside of the sink for the screws using a power drill. Make sure the holes are not deeper than ½ inch.

  • Run a bead of caulk along the underside of the sink along the edge.

  • Place the sink back on the countertop and insert the screws into the holes.

  • Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

  • Turn the countertop over and secure it into place before laying the tile.

  • Cutting and Laying the Tile

  • Make a pattern of the sink out of paper or cardboard.

  • Dry fit the tile over the sink and then place your pattern over the top of the sink.

  • Trace around the pattern using felt tip marker to indicate where you will need to cut the tile.

  • Cut the tile using a tile saw. Cut straight lines into the tiles for corners and then break off the pieces. Once that is done sand the edges of the tile with a sandpaper to smooth the edges.

  • Install the tile around the sink to complete the project.
