How to Keep Your Redwood Fence Looking Like New

Redwood offers a natural ability to stand up to insects and weather conditions, making it a durable fencing material. The oils in redwood cause the wood to resist rot and decay. In addition, a redwood fence provides a splash of color to a yard. Over time, though, the red can fade into a worn gray. Protecting the wood from the elements will keep your redwood fence looking new and preserve the color.

Preserve the beauty of your redwood fence.
  • Wash the fence with trisodium phosphate and water. Scrub dirt and stains, using a scrub brush. Clean tough stains with oxygenated bleach. You can also use a commercially prepared redwood deck and fence wash.

  • Allow the wood to dry completely. Drying times vary, depending on temperature and humidity.

  • Lay a tarp over nearby plants, bushes, decks and patios to protect them from splashes, drips and overspray.

  • Apply a coat of mildew-resistant, UV-blocking wood sealer to the fence. Look for a waterproofing sealer that is specific to redwood. Apply the sealer with a wide paintbrush, paint roller or painter sprayer. If you are using a paintbrush, follow the grain and paint in one direction.

  • Allow the fence to dry for 48 to 72 hours, depending on the weather, before touching it.
