How to Make Fake Curtain Panels

Curtain panels are expensive and rarely come in the actual design you want. A fake curtain panel is one that appears to be a normal curtain but does not actually move along a curtain rod. Instead, it is usually either stapled onto a wooden panel or placed onto a rod and pinned in place. Because this panel is not going to move or have any wear and tear, you do not need to sew it. Instead, you can create a fake no-sew panel in the fabric you want for a fraction of the price of a retail curtain panel.

Curtain panels look good and are not intended to be moved.

  • Measure the distance from side to side and top to bottom on the window where the fake curtain will be placed. Add an extra 3 inches to the top if you are using a curtain rod and an extra 2 inches for hems to the other three sides.This is the amount of fabric you'll need. Subtract the extra 3 inches from the top and 1 inch from each side. This is the amount of lining fabric you'll need.

  • Cut your fabric to the above measurements. There is no need to pre-wash the fabric since you won't ever wash this curtain.

  • Press out any wrinkles with the iron and spray the entire curtain and lining fabric with starch. This will make the panel extra crisp and help it hold its shape.

  • Place the curtain right side down, fold the edges of the entire curtain piece in 1/2 inch and press the seams so that you have a crisp fold.

  • Fold the edges of the sides of the curtain piece (and the top if you are not using a curtain rod) in another inch. Press the edges to get a really crisp fold. If the fold is not holding its form, add some starch and press again. You really want these folds to be crisp.

  • Cut the adhesive batting to the same size as the lining fabric. Sandwich the layers from top to bottom as follows: curtain (right side down), batting (lined up with the bottom of the curtain), lining (right side up and lined up with the bottom of the curtain).

  • Fill your iron with water and steam iron the entire piece. The steam and heat will melt the batting, forming a glue that will hold the pieces together. Wait for the curtain to cool down before continuing.

  • Fold down the top of the curtain 1 1/4 inches if you are using a curtain rod and place a strip of 1/2-inch adhesive webbing under the fabric's edge. Steam press the entire edge.

  • Place a strip of 1/2-inch adhesive webbing under the hem folds along the rest of the curtain. Steam press all the edges to seal the hems. Wait for the curtain to cool and hang it up.
