How to Paint by Dipping

Paint dipping is a faster way to paint an object. It can save you time because you don't have to clean any brushes. The paint that is used is oil based so when you pour it into the water it floats on top. When an object is dipped into your paint-water solution the paint sticks to what you are painting.

Things You Will Need

  • Plastic tarp
  • Twine
  • Object
  • Oil based paint
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Clothes hanger
  • Dish soap

You can use this approach for almost any object such as metal, canvas, wood or even fabric.

  • Spread the tarp out over your work area. Put on the rubber gloves.

  • Clean the object thoroughly with water and soap so that no dirt remains. Dry the object off using paper towels. Tie the twine to the object that's being painted. Tie the other end of the twine to a clothes hanger.

  • Fill the bucket with water so that the object will be fully submerged without touching the bottom. Add 1 cup of the oil based paint. Add more paint if it is not covering the entire surface.

  • Lower the object into the bucket slowly so that it is fully submerged. Pull the object out of the bucket slowly. Hang the object above the bucket so that the excess paint drips off.

  • Leave the object to dry. Remove the twine from the object. If you need to paint more than one object the paint can be reused. Repeat the same steps for each object. Discard the paint and water when you are finished.

    • Tip

    You can create swirls on your object by adding a few drops of different colored oil based paint to the bucket.
