How to Paint Cabinet Ceramic Doorknobs

The ceramic doorknobs on your cabinets or interior doors may be ready for a makeover. If you aren't ready to replace them but want a more custom and updated look, consider paint. Paint the knobs one color to coordinate with your décor, or get creative and add flowers, patterns or even monograms for a completely different look. Consider adding whimsical paint to your children's bathroom by painting ceramic knobs with the alphabet and attaching them to the cabinet doors.

  • Remove the knobs from the cabinets with a screwdriver.

  • Mix a solution of 1 part ammonia to 1 part water. Drop the knob hardware into the solution. Scrub each piece of hardware with a toothbrush to remove all the grease from the surface of the metal. Rinse each piece in clean water. Lay the hardware on a towel to dry.

  • Sand each knob with fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding will help the paint and primer adhere to the slick surface of the ceramic. Wipe away all sanding dust.

  • Place a piece of cardboard outside on the grass or driveway. Set the knobs on a large piece of cardboard so that the front of the knob is facing up. Spray primer and paint will create noxious fumes and are best used outdoors.

  • Spray the cabinet knobs with bonding spray primer. The can should indicate that it is a bonding primer. Spray in a steady back-and-forth motion. Let the knobs dry completely.
