How to Refinish Surell Countertops

Surell solid surface counters are manufactured by Formica. They are similar to Corian and other solid surfaces. Solid-surface counters are good for kitchens and baths because they are durable and stain-resistant They are also easier to clean than tile counters because they don't have grout that needs to be scrubbed. Over time, Surell counters will begin to scratch and the surface may become dull. You can hire a professional to refinish your Surell counters or refinish the surface yourself.

  • Mix equal parts bleach and water in a bucket. Dip a sponge into the solution and clean the counters thoroughly to remove all grime and residue from the surface of the counters. Allow the counters to dry completely.

  • Dampen 180-grit sandpaper with clean water. Sand the visible scratches and stains to remove. Sand in the direction of the scratch two to three times. Go back across the scratch at a 90-degree angle. Continue sanding the stains and scratches in this manner until they are removed.

  • Sand the rest of the counter with the 180-grit paper to make the surface shine even.

  • Switch to 220-grit sandpaper. Sand the entire surface of the counters with the finer-grit paper. This will eliminate any fine scratches left by the coarser-grit paper.

  • Switch to 400-grit sandpaper or finer. The counters should now be free of stains and scratches.

  • Apply kitchen cleanser to the counters and scrub the entire surface gently with a scrub sponge. Buff the counter to bring out its original shine.
