How to Remove Grease Stains off a Chalkboard

Grease stains can make writing on a chalkboard impossible. Chalk will only write on a textured surface, so any grease will leave the surface too slick. Cleaning a chalkboard with soap or solvents can cause a buildup on the surface and possibly spread the grease around.

Clean your chalboard for longtime use.

Things You Will Need

+
  • Cornstarch
  • Paper towels
  • Chalkboard cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Acetone nail polish remover

Clean with dry techniques first before trying anything wet. Specially treated chalkboard cleaning cloth can be found at school supply stores and online.

  • Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch on a fresh grease stain. Leave for 20 minutes, then carefully wipe it off with a paper towel.

  • Wipe the chalkboard with a dry chalkboard cloth, using an overlapping back-and-forth motion over the entire surface. Try marking the area of the grease stain with chalk. If it leaves a mark, the stain has been removed. If it doesn't, continue to the next step.

  • Dampen a cotton pad with rubbing alcohol and rub the stain lightly. When the alcohol has evaporated and the surface is dry, try marking it with chalk. For a stubborn grease stain, use acetone nail polish remover. When the chalkboard is dry and the grease stain has been removed, wipe it down again with the chalkboard cloth.
