How to Remove Sap from Clothing

Sap can end up on your clothing whether you are camping, doing yard work, or simply sitting on a wood bench. It can leave you in a sticky situation when regular laundry detergent won't remove the sap.

You don't have to be collecting maple sap for syrup to end up with tree sap on you clothes.

You may be tempted to just throw away the clothing, but you can eliminate the sap from your favorite jeans or work shirt with items you probably already have in your home.

Things You Will Need

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Clean cloth
  • Turpentine
  • Laundry detergent

  • Wash the piece of clothing in cold water. This helps get any debris off of your clothes that might have stuck to the sap.

  • Pour some rubbing alcohol onto a clean washcloth or cotton swab. When the sap is on cotton clothing, do not worry about using too much alcohol. Rubbing alcohol does not hurt cotton clothing.

  • Dab the alcohol onto the sap stain and rub. Continue rubbing until the alcohol has removed the sap. You can wash the clothing again if you wish, but the alcohol dries on its own without damaging the clothing.

  • Apply turpentine if the sap is not entirely removed. Wash in detergent and water to remove the solvent and the remnants of the sap.
