How to Remove Tape Adhesive From Glass

Tape can leave behind an adhesive on glass that is tricky to remove. The longer it has been there, and the higher the temperature, the more difficult it can be to remove. There are several products on the market, as well as home remedies, that can help you remove this stubborn adhesive.

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Terry cloth
  • WD-40
  • Dissolver, such as Goo Gone

  • Soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and apply to the adhesive. Rub in a circular motion and use new cotton balls and alcohol as needed. It may take some time, but the alcohol should break down the glue.

  • As the glue begins to get gummy, take a terry cloth towel (the rougher, the better) and rub the glue off. Use additional alcohol swabs to clear up any remaining glue.

  • WD-40 is another option for adhesive removal. Apply it to the glue and wait for 5 to 10 minutes. You should be able to remove at least the top layer of glue. Reapply as needed until all the adhesive is gone.

  • Use a degreasing cleaner on the glass to remove the WD-40, and make sure all the adhesive has been removed. Reapply if needed.

  • Apply a commercial adhesive dissolver, such as Goo Gone, to the residue. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.

  • If none of the previous methods work, you might consider consulting a professional cleaner, who can sometimes power wash any remaining residue.
