How to Replace the Lid Switch on a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II Washer

If your Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine no longer spins, it may be time to replace the lid switch. For safety reasons, the washer won’t spin while the lid is open. If the lid switch is broken or worn out, the washer has no way on knowing whether the lid is open or closed and won’t spin. It’s easy to replace the lid switch on a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine, and you’ll have your washer up to speed in no time.

Step 1

Unplug the Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer before attempting any service or repair.

Step 2

Remove the Phillips screws holding the control panel to the top of the washer. You may have to remove the end caps from the control panel to expose the screws. Slide the control panel slightly forward, flip it over the back of the washer and let it hang by its hinges.

Step 3

Insert the blade of a flat screwdriver into one of the spring clips on top of the washer. Pry the clip up and out of its mounting hole. Repeat this process on the other clip to separate the washer body from the chassis.

Step 4

Unplug the lid switch wiring harness from the top of the washer.

Step 5

Open the lid and grasp the front edge of the washer body. Tilt the body toward you at a 45 degree angle and lift it straight up off the washer chassis.

Step 6

Remove the switch connector from the top of the washing machine body. Press the tabs on the side of the connector with a flat screwdriver and push the connector down through the mounting hole.

Step 7

Remove the two Phillips screws holding the lid switch to the rim of the washing machine.

Step 8

Lay the body face down on a towel or blanket to protect it from scratches.

Step 9

Loosen and remove the 5/16-inch bolt holding the ground wire to the body of the washer, using a nut driver. Pry the wiring harness out of the clips under the rim of the washing machine and remove the switch and harness.

Step 10

Install the wiring harness of a replacement switch under the metal clips. Fasten the ground wire of the new switch to the body of the washing machine using the original bolt. Slide the harness connector into the mounting hole in the top of the washing machine. Stand the body upright.

Step 11

Align the switch with the holes under the rim. Insert the Phillips screws and tighten them securely. Set the body back onto the chassis of the washing machine. Push the spring clips back into the mounting holes until they snap into place.

Step 12

Connect the lid switch harness to the connector on top of the washer.

Step 13

Flip the console forward and pull it slightly back to lock it in place. Insert and tighten the screws. Place the caps back on the ends of the control panel, if necessary.

Step 14

Plug the Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer back in.
