How to Take the Back off Your La-Z-Boy Recliner

If you've ever had to move a recliner to another room or another home, you know how awkward they are to carry. If your recliner is made by La-Z-Boy, you can easily and safely remove the chair's back -- and save your back in the process.

  • Find the brackets on each side of the lower back of your La-Z-Boy recliner. Each bracket has an arm that locks. The back is locked into place when the arms are in the down position.

  • Raise each locking arm up at a 30- to 45-degree angle. Slide the arms up with a flat screwdriver if necessary, being careful not to gouge the chair's fabric.

  • Grasp the sides of the chair back with your hands. Lift up evenly on the back to pull it out of the brackets on the base of the chair.

  • Reinstall the recliner's back by lining it up with the brackets. Push the back downward over the brackets. Press the arms down to lock the back in place.
