Ingredients in Spot Shot | HomeSteady

Spot Shot is a brand of carpet stain remover manufactured and marketed by the WD-40 Company, which also produces WD-40. The product is designed to remove everything from new oil stains to old food stains. The only types of stains the product claims not to effectively treat are set-in red fruit juice stains and rust as the chemicals needed to remove red dye and metal-based stains do not work well on carpet. Spot Shot uses a few specific chemicals to effectively remove stains from clothing, fabric and carpet fibers.

2-Butoxyethanol

Learn what Spot Shot uses to remove stains from carpet.

Ethylene glycol monobutyl, or 2-butoxyethanol, is the main ingredient in Spot Shot, comprising 25 percent of its active ingredients. It is commonly used in aerosolized automobile, arts and crafts and cleaning products. An organic solvent, ethylene glycol monobutyl is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is relatively nonvolatile and inexpensive solvent that helps separate stain-causing molecules from carpet fibers.

2-2-Butoxyethoxy

Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, or 2-2-butoxyethoxy, is another main active ingredient in Spot Shot. Very similar to 2-Butoxyethanol, 2-2-Butoxyethoxy is a type of glycol ether commonly used as a solvent in inks, cleaners and coatings. It evaporates slowly and is water soluble. The chemical has a low level of toxicity when it comes into contact with the skin or is inhaled or swallowed in very small amounts.

Liquified Petroleum Gas

Liquified petroleum gas is the third main ingredient listed on Spot Shot's material safety data sheet. It is commonly used in cooking, such as with gas grills, but in this small amount in this product, it is used to help aerosolize the cleaner and effectively spray it on carpet and fabric stains. This ingredient is also listed as "propane/n-butane" on some materials safety data sheets. The small amount of propane makes the product subject to flammability and therefore should not be exposed to temperatures above 120 degrees.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol, is the last active ingredient listed on Spot Shot's safety material data sheet. It is a colorless, flammable chemical compound with a strong bitter odor. It is included in Spot Shot for its ability to dissolve a wide range of nonpolar molecular compounds present in many fats and oils.
